Details

Children are now surfing earlier and younger than ever before. We wanted to create a SmoothStar model designed for children with lighter in weight and shorter in surf stance. Using the Mini Grom model, children will be able to repetitively practice surfing on land while perfecting their balance and movement without necessarily having to go to the ocean.

What's so Special?

Apart from the deck size, what sets this model apart from all our other SmoothStar boards is the Mini Thruster located at the front of the board. The Mini Thruster is a revolutionary patented front turning truck that helps simulate how a surfboard turns and moves in the water. It contains soft rubbers inside the turning mechanism instead of springs. This makes it more responsive and easier to turn left and right.

Why choose this model

By using the SmoothStar Mini Grom, children will improve their balance, stance, body movement, and learn the basic principles of turning on a surfboard while having fun. Children will have the opportunity to practice their bottom hand turns, which is the first step of progression towards getting the most out of their surfing.

Most popular questions for this model

What is different about the Mini Grom compared to other SmoothStar models?

The Mini Grom has a Mini Thruster attached to the front of the nose of the board. The Mini Thruster has rubbers instead of springs and young riders are able to turn and move the Mini Grom a lot easier than they can with a Thruster that has a spring in it.

What is the difference between the Mini Grom Thruster compared to the other standard SmoothStar Thruster?

The Mini Grom has a different Thruster compared to all other SmoothStar boards. The Thruster in the Mini Grom is smaller and uses rubbers instead of a spring which is used in the standard Thruster on all other SmoothStar boards, These rubbers make turning and moving the Mini Grom a lot easier for younger riders.

Does my child need skating ability to ride the board?

Absolutely not however, they do need to apply surfing technique in order to ride the board. On a SmoothStar, riders (both kids and adults) will adopt a wider stance than they would use for a normal skateboard. Generally, children pick things up a lot easier and quicker than adults because they have a lower center of gravity combined with pretty good balance. For kids, the movement needed to ride a SmoothStar tends to come naturally so having previously learnt to skateboard really isn't necessary.
